PORKIES

When two specific breeds are purposely crossed to create a new breed, the result is a hybrid, or designer dog. In the case of a porkie, the two breeds that are crossed are the Yorkshire terrier and the Pomeranian. Like many hybrids, the porkie was created in the United States. The American Kennel Club has not yet recognized most hybrids, including the porkie.

The porkie is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Yorkshire Terrier. Since they are not purebred dogs, their appearance can vary from dog to dog. Personality: Porkies are usually friendly, affectionate dogs that are loyal and obedient. They enjoy human companionship and like being cuddled and hugged. Because of their small size they may not be the best dogs for small children who don't know how to handle small dog breeds. This dog breed has low exercise needs and will be happy to go for daily leisurely walks.

Other Names

Yoranians, Yorkie Poms, Porkie

Porkie Build Information

Created by crossing two toy breeds, the porkie is tiny. Porkies stand at an average height of 6 to12 inches at the shoulders and weigh between three and seven pounds. Their coats are usually somewhat long and silky, and they come in any of the colors that Yorkshire terriers and Pomeranians exhibit. Their ears are pointy, and they may either stand erect or flip downward.

A porkie may exhibit more physical characteristics of either the Yorkshire terrier or of the Pomeranian parent.

Appearance

Porkie coats will require daily attention with a comb or brush to prevent them from tangling and matting. Some owners choose to keep their porkies’ coats trimmed short instead. Toy breeds have a high propensity for developing periodontal disease. Take steps to prevent this from happening by brushing the porkie’s teeth on a daily basis.
