Guess What Breeds These Cartoon Dogs Are

Scooby-Doo

For no other reason than that I like animation, here’s a gallery of cartoon dogs. Try to guess what each dog’s breed is. I’ll start with Scooby-Doo, probably the cartoon canine who resonates most with my generation (EVERYONE I know has said “Ruh-Roh!” at one time or another.) What type of dog is Scooby?

Answer: Scooby is probably the most famous Great Dane in popular media. (Marmaduke fans would probably quibble over that.)

Astro

Up next: Astro from The Jetsons. What breed is he?

Answer: Astro is likely another Great Dane. I was unable to find a conclusive answer on the Interwebs.

Brian

Fast forward to Family Guy. Here’s Brian. Next to Stewie, he’s my favorite character from the show. He is?

Answer: Brian claims to be a Golden Retriever mix, but I think he looks more like Snoopy from Peanuts, which makes him Beagle in my book! Clark thinks Brian looks like a fat West Highland Terrier.

Bandit

One of my all-time favorite Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid was Jonny Quest. Jonny had a dog named Bandit (His face markings look like a bandit’s mask. Get it?) I think it’s pretty obvious what type of dog he is.

Answer: English Bulldog.

Gromit

“I’m just crackers about cheese!”

Another personal favorite is Gromit from the British Wallace and Gromit series. Any idea what he is?

Answer: Inconclusive, but most fans on the Internet speculate that he’s a mixed breed, some say he’s a Hound of some type.

Goofy

Answer: The consensus is that Goofy is a Black and Tan Coonhound. (In case you wondering, there’s another cartoon Coonhound. Huckleberry Hound is a Blue Tick Coonhound.)

Pluto

Answer: Disney’s official response is that he’s a mixed breed. I wonder if he’s a rescue too?

Mr. Peabody

Yet another favorite from my childhood: Mr. Peabody from . (The pic below is from the recent 3D animated feature.) What breed is he?

Answer: Mr. Peabody is a Beagle.

Muttley

Another one of the most famous Saturday morning cartoon dogs comes from The Wacky Races and The Perils of Penelope Pitstop. This is villain Dick Dastardly’s hench-dog, Muttley. What type of dog is Muttley?

Answer: The show’s producers Hanna and Barbera said Muttley was a mixed breed, but they did provide a lineage! He’s part Airedale, Bloodhound, Pointer, and indeterminate “hunting dog.” Muttley was famous for his wheezing snicker.

Ren

Ren of Ren and Stimpy is what type of dog?

Answer: Chihuahua

Huckleberry Hound

He’s probably some type of Southern Coon Hound. Complete with Southern accent.

And break the laws that they should fear
And frighten all who see or hear
